People speak differently between their two special times in life which include their youth and adulthood. The words which people used to speak in normal conversation during past decades now create confusion for young people. The following list shows traditional vocabulary which baby boomers continue to use but which Gen Z members no longer recognize or use.

Rolodex

People used this rotating card holder device to keep contact information before the invention of electronic address books and smartphone devices. 

Dial 

People used to operate phones through rotary dials which required physical turning. People today enter phone numbers through touch screens instead of using dial systems.

Carbon Copy

The term describes duplicate documents which people created by using carbon paper. The term now exists in emails as the abbreviation “CC” which people use to send copies of their messages.

Rewind

Cassette tapes and VHS tapes required users to rewind their content through manual operation. The need to rewind movies vanished with the introduction of streaming services.

Busy Signal

The sound of a busy signal emerged when other people used the phone line. The sound of busy signals has become uncommon because people now use mobile phones.

Long-Distance Call

Telephone companies used to charge extra fees for calls that went beyond local calling areas. Gen Z members do not consider the distance between phone calls when they communicate with others.

Film 

People used film rolls to create photographs which they needed to develop into finished products. The term “film” today refers to video content.

Fax

The device enables users to transmit printed documents through telephone lines to remote locations. The device lost most of its functions because people now prefer email and messaging applications.

Typewriter

The writing machine functions through physical keys which send letters to paper. The user needed to use correction fluid or complete the entire document again.

Answering Machine

The device operated independently to capture caller messages which you could not receive. People now use voicemail applications to replace this system.

Slide Rule

The device functions as a manual computation tool which predates the development of electronic calculators. The device used to be common in educational institutions and engineering fields.

Rabbit Ears

The device consists of metal antennas which people use to boost TV signal reception through installation on TV tops. Modern televisions have eliminated the need for rabbit ears as a reception solution.
